As mentioned previously, the internal coating properties can be represented as interrelated subsystems, defining their geometrical parameters, thermal and structural characteristics, and strength and residual strains. These properties, in turn, depend on as the characteristics of the previously discussed carrier gas, sprayed material, energy parameters of the power source, and external impacts on the sprayed process.

Let us consider internal properties of the coatings in the following sequence: formation stage, the study of the structure and residual strain. Next, we will consider the main external physical effects affecting the properties of the coatings.

Standard methods adopted for solid materials are used for studies of the internal parameters of coatings. They include methods for evaluating the geometric dimensions and roughness, methods of chemical, X-ray structure and phase analysis and mechanical testing. However, the study of the properties of coatings has some specific features associated with their small thickness, laminated structure and non-uniformity of properties regarding the coating’s cross-section. The description and analysis of the basic methods of studying the internal coatings parameters are performed in this chapter.
